166 Geary Street

166 Geary Street is also known as The Grace Building. Since the building was built in 1907, the elevator was in serious need of updating. Over time, it was modified to meet safety regulations; however, nothing was done to upgrade the interior.

UEI was brought in to upgrade the entire cab to current finishes, requiring a complete dismantling of the cab, with the goal of maintaining similar design qualities to the building and the original cab design.

The original cab design was very open, meaning you could see into the elevator shaft when inside the elevator. The design team wanted to keep this same feel, so we selected woven bronze metal that provided the same rider experience. If you look closely, you’ll notice the slight ghosting from the elevator shaft in the photos showing this quality.

The ceiling, platform, and basic structure were the only things that remained. Everything else was upgraded or rebuilt. Six-millimeter Neolith was used for the flooring to keep the weight in check and blend with the lobby.
